Hey friends,
Last week, I introduced you to Dairy Management Inc. The federal organization that is (not so) secretly behind all of the cheese and milk pushed on us in society.
This week, I am diving into the war on milk. Since the 70s, milk consumption has sharply declined, with almost half of US families drinking alternative milks like oat and almond milk.
But it begs the question: are these alternative milks even milks? What makes something a milk? What is the very definition of milk?
Over the last decade, the definition of the word 'milk' has been litigated in courts around the world. Honestly, that's a legal case I could get behind arguing. Would you be on team Dairy Milk or team Alternative Milk? Reply and let me know.
Milk, as
defined by Britannica, is liquid secreted by the mammary glands of female mammals to nourish their young for a period beginning immediately after birth.
After some deep Googles, I've come to the conclusion that alternative milk has been called "milk" for so long because of its coloring and use. Both are similar enough to traditional dairy milk that it makes sense to call them milk for consumer purposes.
That being said, Big Dairy in Europe has won multiple court cases claiming that alternative milks are not allowed to use any dairy terminology to describe milk-like beverages, cheeses, yogurts, etc.
That hasn't stopped alternative milks from continuing to grow in the biggest. With a YoY 10% growth rate compared to milk’s 2% YoY growth rate, I think we will see Big Dairy continue to take more footholds in the market with dairy-based products.
Next Week: I'm talking about the explosion of dairy-filled products at fast food chains, protein-packed snacks, and more ways that Big Dairy is infiltrating our food chain.
(Also, sorry I missed last week. I am working on releasing My Actually Fun Passport for my brand, Actually Fun Coffee. Feel free to follow along on social.)
Want to know more about milk? Have questions? Want me to include something else in my research? Reply, and you can literally help formulate what I talk about in the next two weeks.
Creamily Yours,
Clebbie Debbie
