I Was asked to leave The church
Last weekend, I was visited by two angels. My friends Austin and Jane. They are lovely friends who are familiar with most of my chaos and understand the way I operate on a level that would be foreign to most people who haven’t known me for at least 10 years.
While they were in town, we took photos for The Unserious Club - Vol. 2. I would love to share some of the photos with you, but I’m holding them for a future newsletter.
But let’s just say that I was looking for a church to take photos at for legitimately weeks for the photos of Jane. After I finally heard that we wouldn’t have a sanctuary to use for my shoot, I discovered a location that was covered in a beautiful mural. I’ve included a photo to prove to you how distinctly beautiful the mural is.
All that to say that we showed up and wanted to be done literally as quickly as possible. Partially because we had been shooting for 5 hours already that day, and also because we didn’t have permission to take photos there.
So we started shooting, and in t-minus 5 minutes, someone pulled up to tell us that we “couldn’t take pictures in front of the public mural” because of the “misinformation” that often circulates in media about their church and how they worship a man.
Don’t worry, y’all.

As someone who was raised by religious education and in religious environments, I knew exactly how to talk the person telling me to leave and exactly what to YouTube search when I got home.
I’ve linked the video below, but in short: this denomination of church has a divine bishop that they call Sweet Daddy (goated, tbh). He’s kind of like the Pope, but in a more paywalled way. Also, they openly fundraise in the church to, like, continue to the next portion of the sermon.
All in all, cults are kind of marketing geniuses. As a person with strong marketing instincts, I think that’s really what always drew me to religion.

Here’s a short video about how I stay inspired! The truth is that I’ve been trying to spend less time on the internet and more time creating every week. So I pulled from my ADHD piles of zines, magazines, and photos that I’ve purchased over the years and made a cute little collage on the walls of my office.
I made a quick video about the perpetual strew that I warned y’all about a few weeks ago. You can read about that here.
