This is week 4/4 on clowns. If you missed anything, go read it here.

My Unserious
Clown-Clusion

After spending countless hours researching clowns, I think there are really two types of clowns that we have in this world: literal and figurative clowns. Literal clowns, of course, mean real clowns and performers who get on the stage to entertain and distract us from the disgusting realities of the world around us. Figurative clowns are all around us. Not as easily identifiable, but still there. Because the reality is that we are all clowns. And if you are reading this and thinking to yourself, “no, the fuck I am not a clown,” then you are DEFINITELY a clown.

Two weeks ago, I said clowns are designed to entertain, distract, and occupy. Which brings me back to my prior point: figurative clowns are everywhere. When you open TikTok and scroll from video to video, you see creators there sharing content designed to occupy your time, entertain you, and distract you from external stimulation.

Basically, clowning was the original social media scroll. Kings would use their jesters to take their minds off things; our grandparents would go to the theater or the circus to be entertained and ignore the wars waging on outside. Modern drag clowns use their talents to bring joy and distraction to their community. Sacred clowns provide entertainment that’s meant to make you think differently of the ritual at hand.

The principles of clowning are modern reflections of whimsy and levity that should be in every person’s daily life. As technology has advanced and life has grown busier, whimsy and levity often get tossed to the wayside as they are “childish things”.

But here’s the reality: The clown spirit is in all of us. We all have access to the little clown inside. It’s just up to us if we want to let them out of their tiny little clown car.

I’ve compiled all the resources I used to research and learn about clowns on this landing page, and also include a curriculum here to help open yourself up to your inner clown.

If you enjoyed this series, share it with a friend, reply to this email, or comment on my YouTube video! Whatever you want, all of them help me as a small creator who does all of this in their spare time.

Thanks for reading,
Clebbie
